What's your idea of a perfect Friday evening?
For many, it was enjoying a delicious meal and live music at the Lummi Gateway Center on May 2nd. Every first Friday of the month, people gather there to hear the music and storytelling of Swil Kanim. You never know what to expect, but one thing you can be certain of--it will be good. Last Friday was no exception as the night began with fish tacos, lovingly made by the Sche'Langen Seafood Market. Then, as the rain started to pour down, the pitter-patter accompanied Swil Kanim and Peter Ali in their violin/flute duet. The Whatcom Old Boys took the audience on a journey through the 1960's and 1970, and poet Ann Carlson shared a poem, backed up by Swil Kanim, Peter Ali, and her native drum.
The audience was treated to a live performance of songs from Swil Kanim's first recorded album. Interspersed were his stories of enlightenment as he paid homage to the mentor who inspired much of his work.
First Friday has become a place where community members can come together and share their gifts, talents, and stories. Music, poetry, comedy—there is something for everyone. As a newcomer to First Friday, I can say I have enjoyed immensely the talent that this community has to offer and I appreciate the opportunity to gather, relax, and reflect on the gifts and the people in my life that have inspired me. I urge everyone to attend and see for themselves.
