What is the Honoring Our Heritage Curriculum?
Supported by a Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Grant, the HonorWorks’ curriculum Honoring our Heritage: Exploring Issues of Discrimination creates a foundation for classroom discussion, inquiry development, and group and individual introspection. This curriculum not only examines the heritage of Native Americans in Whatcom County, Washington, but also explores the issues of stereotypes, cultural perspectives, and discrimination between the diverse populations that make up our community. These issues have created an underlying, but powerful framework of distrust and miscommunication that often hinders the spirit of a true and effective communication.
Curriculum lessons are aligned with Washington State Standards (Essential Academic Learning Requirements) and are written toward an audience of 7th through 12th grade students. Each lesson has essential questions that guide instruction and student understanding. These lessons are a guideline, but are dependent upon the particular strategies and strengths of individual teachers. The Common Core Standards are integrated throughout the lessons when students are asked to examine perspectives, support claims, research and analyze resources, and reason logically. Writing informative texts, narrating historical events, and creating multimedia projects to illustrate ideas and concepts are all skills embedded within the Common Core Standards. Where appropriate, technology has been integrated to support student investigation and project-based learning while maintaining alignment with Essential Academic Learning Requirements and Common Core.
The curriculum content is intended to provoke thoughtful conversations and to create an awareness of the role individuals can play in honoring and respecting diverse opinions and viewpoints. Students will be asked to set goals for their own behaviors and to facilitate understanding amongst their peers and their community.
